Niko Kolar was born in 1971 in Slovenj Gradec.
He has worked for the police since 1990, when he completed the police cadet school. He started his career at the Dravograd Police Station, where he was a police officer and community policing officer.
While working, he studied law and in 1995 graduated from the College of Law and later also from the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor.
In 1996 he was transferred to the Slovenj Gradec Police Station, where he was assistant commander, before becoming commander in 2004.
After leading the Slovenj Gradec Police Station for two years, he was transferred to the Uniformed Police Division of the Slovenj Gradec Police Directorate. When the two directorates merged in 2011, he continued his work in the Uniformed Police Division of the Celje Police Directorate.
In August 2013 he was appointed head of the Director’s Service of the Celje Police Directorate, which he remained for over five years.
On 1 October 2018, he took over the management of the Celje Police Directorate.
