Introduced temporary controls at the borders with Croatia and Hungary

Due to developments in the wider region and potential security risks, Slovenia is temporarily reintroducing controls at Slovenia's internal borders with Croatia and Hungary as of midnight Saturday, 21 October 2023. For more information see our press release (19 October 2023)

Information for travellers

Travellers should observe the conditions for crossing the border at specific border crossing points, to follow a changed traffic regime and instructions of police officers, and to submit to border checks. In order to cross the border, they are required to present a valid travel document. They should therefore check the validity of their travel documents beforehand.

Open the map or see the list of border crossing points:

Anyone with a valid document, regardless of their nationality, can cross the internal borders between Schengen countries anywhere and at any time, without border checks. Slovenia, too, has abolished checks at its internal land, sea and air borders with EU member states when it joined the Schengen area.

Slovenian citizens need an identity card or a valid passport to enter or stay in another EU member state.

Slovenia shares an internal Schengen border with Austria, Italy, Hungary and Croatia.

Border with Austria

The Republic of Slovenia borders the Republic of Austria to the north. This border was established by the Treaty of Saint-Germain (10 September 1919) and the Austrian State Treaty (15 May 1955). The total length of the land border with the Republic of Austria is 318 km.

This border was established by the Paris Peace Treaty (10 February 1947), the London Memorandum (5 October 1954) and the Osimo Agreements (10 November 1975). The land border with Italy is 232 km long, and the sea border is 28.9 km long.

Border with Hungary

The Republic of Slovenia borders the Republic of Hungary to the east. This border was established by the Treaty of Trianon (4 June 1920). The land border with Hungary is 102 km long.
