A nationwide speed marathon was held yesterday, 9 April 2025, with police officers conducting speed checks at 575 locations. Despite an active media campaign and publicised locations, a total of 1,443 speeding offences were detected.

Most of the speeding occurred in built-up areas, where 949 offenders were detected. On roads outside built-up areas, 167 speeding offences were detected, compared to 327 on motorways and expressways.

Police stopped 748 speeding drivers on the spot, informed them of the offence and carried out the relevant offence procedures. A further 695 vehicle owners can expect to receive penalty notices in the post.

Two drivers were stopped for driving more than 40 km/h and up to 50 km/h over the speed limit in a built-up area. On roads outside built-up areas, three drivers exceeded the speed limit by more than 40 km/h up to 50 km/h, and one driver exceeded the speed limit by more than 50 km/h. On motorways, seven drivers exceeded the speed limit by more than 50 km/h up to 60 km/h, and two drivers by more than 60 km/h.

The speed enforcement marathon aims to slow down the speed on our roads. Drivers can contribute to road safety by driving sensibly and in a manner adapted to the road conditions, which is what the police would like to see every day, not just during the speed enforcement campaign. The police therefore implore all drivers to drive carefully and adapt their speed to the speed limit, their skills and road conditions.
